Preparing to Lead Taraweeh: A Revision Timeline for Huffaaz
Leading Taraweeh is the most public examination a hafiz ever sits. Twenty-nine consecutive nights, no retakes, a congregation that includes at least three uncles following the mushaf line by line. Yet many huffaaz begin serious revision only when Ramadan’s dates start appearing in WhatsApp groups. Here is the timeline the strong ones actually follow.
Six Months Out: Take Stock Honestly
Recite the whole Quran to yourself — or better, to another hafiz — and grade every juz honestly: solid, shaky, or sleeping. Nobody’s thirty juz age evenly; the juz you memorised at twelve behaves differently from the one you finished with. This audit decides everything that follows. A hafiz who knows his weak surahs in Rabi’ al-Awwal fixes them calmly; one who discovers them in Sha’ban panics.
Four Months Out: Rebuild the Sleeping Portions
Work the weakest juz first, at the pace of real repair — reciting to someone, not just reading. This is also the time to decide your Ramadan portion honestly: if a third of your hifz is still waking up, a shared mihrab or a half-khatm commitment is not a failure. It is professionalism.
Two Months Out: Recite Standing, Aloud, Long
Taraweeh is a physical act. Leading a juz means standing and projecting for the better part of an hour, night after night. Private revision on the sofa does not build that. Recite standing, in voice, in long continuous stretches — and if you can, lead others: family, students, a local halaqah. The stumbles that appear only under observation are the ones worth finding now.
One Month Out: Simulate the Real Thing
Sha’ban is for dress rehearsal: recite your planned nightly portions on the actual schedule, ideally after standing in prayer, when the body is tired. Confirm every practical detail with your masjid — pace, portion, backup, honorarium — so that when the moon is sighted, the only thing on your mind is the recitation itself.
You Carry It; Let Someone Carry You
If you’re a hafiz preparing for a mihrab — or hoping to be offered one — register with Qiyam, the Huffaaz Taraweeh Programme. We match huffaaz with masjids that fit their portion, pace, and riwayah, with the expectations agreed before Ramadan begins. Your job is the Quran. Ours is everything around it.
