What Masjids Provide a Taraweeh Hafiz: Accommodation, Food, Travel and Honorarium
Most misunderstandings between a masjid and its Taraweeh hafiz are not about the recitation. They are about the practical arrangements nobody wrote down: where the hafiz stays, who feeds him, who pays for travel, and what the honorarium is. Agreeing these early protects both sides.
Accommodation
A hafiz who lives locally needs nothing. One travelling from another city or country needs somewhere to stay for the whole month. Some masjids have rooms on site; others arrange a host family or rent somewhere nearby; some can only help find a place. Say clearly which you are offering.
Food
Leading Taraweeh every night is tiring, and a visiting hafiz may not have a kitchen. Many masjids provide iftar, and some suhoor too. If you cannot, say so, so the hafiz can plan.
Travel
For a reciter from elsewhere, decide whether you cover the full journey, local transport only, or make a contribution. For a hafiz from abroad, travel and visa costs can be the largest expense, so raise it in the first conversation.
Honorarium
Some masjids pay a fixed honorarium, some hold a collection from the congregation, some give a gift at the end of Ramadan, and some huffaaz lead lillah, for the sake of Allah, with nothing expected. All are fine; what matters is that both sides know which it is. See our honorarium guide.
For huffaaz: can you manage without support?
Be honest with yourself about costs. A local hafiz living at home may need nothing. A student travelling for a month may only be able to accept if accommodation and food are covered. Saying so early is not impolite; it helps a masjid match you properly.
Put it in one message
Before you confirm, write the arrangements in a single message both sides keep: dates, nightly portion, accommodation, food, travel, honorarium and a contact for problems.
Qiyam, our Taraweeh programme, asks both masjids and huffaaz these questions up front, so matches start with the practicalities agreed. Masjids: request a reciter · Huffaaz: register.
